Dragon Ball Z: Infinite World Hands-On

The popular spiky-haired Saiyan is back in Dragon Ball Z: Infinite World, where developer Dimps--responsible for the Budokai series--has taken the best features from the last three games and combined it into Infinite World. This PlayStation 2 game is still a fighting game at its core, but it includes minigames to break up the gameplay and a cast of over 40 characters to choose from. This may be the last time we see a Dragon Ball Z game on the PlayStation 2 from Atari, and from our brief playtime with a yet-to-be-finished build at Atari's Gamers' Day in San Francisco, it seems to be coming along nicely.

Fans of the series should note that the story will cover all of the Dragon Ball Z storyline as well as some of Dragon Ball GT. For newcomers, this wouldn't be a bad place to start, as you can catch up with the entire Dragon Ball Z storyline with Infinite World. We sat with producer Donny Clay, who told us that the game could take anywhere from 15 to 20 hours to complete, depending on the player and how thorough you want to be.

Whether or not you liked the board game system from Budokai 2, it's back, and you have the freedom to walk around the map and hit up locations for a battle or a minigame. More areas will open up as you complete the markers on the map. The single-player campaign is called "Dragon Missions," and that's where you'll progress through the story and see scenes from the series. Different mission types are spread throughout; sometimes you'll play in a time attack mode, or sometimes you'll have to fight under certain parameters such as beating your opponent using your energy beam only.

We got a chance to play around with Goku in a few matches to see how the controls work. Infinite World will look and feel like a simplified version of Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, which was released earlier this year. Your battles aren't limited to the area that you start in, and the over-the-top special attacks are fun to watch and a blast to execute, once you've figured out how. The controls feel solid and responsive in the battles that we played, and the developer has included moves from previous games such as teleportation.

The minigames are what Dimps included for the fans, and even though the meat of the game is still in the fighting, some of the minigames we saw could be a welcome break. They weren't very involved or complicated; the ones we checked out included shooting boxes out of the sky and chasing around a monkey. We were told that there would be a variety of games to check out when it's done, so hopefully we'll get to see more of those soon.

The cel-shaded graphics look great, and the original Japanese and English voice actors can be set in the options. We were told that there's also character customization similar to Budokai 2 that uses the capsule system--so by using the in-game currency zeni, you can build your characters and beef them up with special abilities. There is a training mode for beginners, plus a secret mode for players to discover.

Be sure to check back soon for more details, because Goku's final appearance on the PS2 will be in November.

Due to be launched next Tuesday, the PSP-3000 Ratchet & Clank Entertainment Pack has managed to slip into at least one Best Buy a few days early, where it was quickly snatched up by friendly tipster Aaron G. He sent us a few unboxing shots out of the kindness of his heart, and now he's undoubtedly too engrossed in National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets and that ultra-bright screen to pay us much heed. Oh Nicolas Cage, what a charmer you are.

BlackBerry Storm bows, comes next month to Verizon and Vodafone

A storm's arrival typically isn't something to celebrate, but we're going to make a notable exception here seeing how the BlackBerry Storm is less of a destructive weather pattern and more of an incredibly hot smartphone -- arguably RIM's hottest to date. Fit to its business-savvy roots, the long-rumored handset comes equipped with the most comprehensive global roaming capabilities of virtually any wireless device you'll find anywhere, featuring EV-DO Rev. A, quadband EDGE, and 2100MHz HSPA for Europe. Beyond that, the Storm becomes RIM's very first touchscreen phone, mounting a 3.26-inch 480 x 360 glass display on a unique clickable surface so that the entire thing can be pressed downwards -- just like a real button -- for tactile feedback when making selections. It includes a full HTML finger-navigable browser, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint editing capabilities, Bluetooth 2.0, 1GB of on-board storage with an 8GB microSD card bundled in the box, 3.5mm headphone jack, automatic orientation and ambient lighting sensors, and a 3.2-megapixel autofocus cam with dedicated flash, making it a legitimate jack-of-all-trades that seems likely to be able to handle even the most chaotic personal and professional lives users can throw its way. It'll allegedly do 15 days of standby or 5.5 hours of talk time on either GSM or CDMA networks. No word on pricing yet -- we're told all will be revealed "in the coming weeks" -- but it'll launch on both Verizon and Vodafone in November.

Cliff claims Gears 2 is 'Epic's best work yet'

Epic Game's Cliff Bleszinski has a confession. Something that he has to get off his chest. His confession; Gears of War 2 is the best game to come out of Epic Games. We agree.

"After two years of pouring our heart and passion into Gears of War 2, the team is immensely happy with what we've created," admitted Bleszinski to CVG. "This is Epic's best work yet, and we can't wait to see the response from fans and newcomers to the series alike." You know, we can't wait to see what the response will be either as we sit here sharpening our chainsaw blades in eager anticipating for Reaver riding and all the joy Gears 2 will bring us this November.

New MacBooks to be based on NVIDIA GeForce 9400 / 9300 chipsets?

With a new MacBook announcement now just days away, speculation is unsurprisingly at a fever pitch as to exactly what Apple has in store, and the folks at PC Perspective have now pieced together a few clues to whet your appetite in anticipation of the big event. Most of those are drawn from mounting evidence from the NVIDIA camp, including the image above that made an appearance on the company's website a few days ago and, most importantly, word that NVIDIA would be releasing its GeForce 9400 and 9300 chipsets based on the MCP79 integrated chipset design on October 15th (conveniently not stepping on Apple's toes the day before). The implication there being that the GeForce chipsets would replace the relatively underpowered integrated Intel graphics on the current MacBooks, with the new MacBook Pros supposedly getting an additional boost from a discrete G92-based mobility GeForce 9600. As PC Perspective points out, if true, that would be quite a coup for NVIDIA, especially considering that it wasn't all that long ago some were talking about it quitting the chipset business altogether.
